One might say I’m a little basketball obsessed….
Of course, we know I’m crazy for fashion. But…
This one goes out to the style icons playing in the bubble. While sports may not be interesting to all of those who read my Style Stories, please know that I’m so grateful to those who read weekly! My sports readers and certainly my sons will enjoy this fun piece.
One of the many changes to this year’s playoffs include: NO “tunnel walk” in fashionable outfits. It’s the equivalent of no red carpet to Hollywood! Instead of showing up to games in high fashion and designer collaborations, the NBA style stars have to arrive in their team uniforms. For some, this might be a relief, but for PJ Tucker (one of basketball’s top 10 dressers) he describes getting all dressed up and arriving at the game as part of the excitement. Aka the hoops version of getting dressed up for work! Now, he compares arriving in his uniform to high school AAU tournaments.
One way the NBA players have been able to express themselves during the pandemic is by adding personal phrases on the back of their jerseys to express their feelings with 29 social justice messages that were approved by the NBA and many players have opted in. Sources say that Russel Westbrook’s (of the Houston Rockets) clothing line called “Honor the Gift” partnered with the National Basketball Player’s Association to produce shirts with slogans that were NOT on the approved back-of-the-jersey list.
I miss the red carpet of the NBA. I miss seeing what Russel Westbrook will pull off. Next year, (fingers crossed), make sure to check out the following stylish NBA players including Westbrook, PJ Tucker, James Harden, Chris Paul, LeBron James and D’angelo Russel (who is GQ’s 2019 winner of most fashionable player). And therefore, the Rockets for the win here, with 3 out of 6 of the most stylish players all on one team! Personally I root for Steph Curry and the Warriors just so this story is complete.
Good luck to all of the NBA players and thank you for the entertainment you are providing! Basketball > any Netflix show. I’m sorry.
